Every food business operator — from a home baker to a manufacturer — needs an FSSAI registration or licence before trading. The tier depends mainly on turnover and on the kind of activity. FSSAI raised the turnover limits from 1 April 2026, so many businesses that previously needed a State licence can now hold a basic registration.

Which tier applies
From 1 April 2026, the turnover limits are:
- Basic registration — annual turnover up to ₹1.5 crore
- State licence — above ₹1.5 crore and up to ₹50 crore
- Central licence — above ₹50 crore, and certain activities such as import regardless of turnover
If you already hold a registration or licence, we check whether your tier should change under the new limits.
