Udyam registration is the government's record of your business as a micro, small or medium enterprise. It opens access to priority sector lending, government schemes and tender preferences, and gives you statutory protection against late payment by larger buyers. Registration is free on the government portal and is based largely on self-declaration — the work is in getting the classification and activity codes right.

Questions we get asked
Is there a government fee for Udyam registration?
No. Registration on the official Udyam portal is free.
Can traders register?
Retail and wholesale traders can obtain Udyam registration, mainly for priority sector lending. Some scheme benefits are limited to manufacturers and service businesses.
What protection do I get against late payment?
Micro and small enterprises are entitled to be paid within the agreed period, capped at 45 days where there is a written agreement, with interest on delayed payments. Buyers who pay late can also lose their income tax deduction for that expense.
What happens when my business grows?
Classification is updated from your income tax and GST data. If you cross a limit, you move to the next category, and there are rules on when that change takes effect.
I already have an old Udyog Aadhaar. Is that still valid?
No. Older Udyog Aadhaar memoranda have been replaced by Udyam registration, so a fresh registration is needed.
